Watch for more events – presently scheduled from Noon to 3:00PM the Jagermeister-sponsored, Fritz’s Polka Band will be performing at the market.
The group was formed in 1978 by lead accordionist, the late Fred Scherz Sr., and his eight-year old son, Fritz, for whom the band was named. Sadly, Fred passed away on November 14, 2009, but Fritz is going to try to keep FPB going. FPB performs an eclectic mix of musical styles, including modern polka, country, fox-trot, waltz, and more! Fritz’s Polka Band is NOT an oompa pa band or the stereotypical “polka” band. In fact, FPB is known for breaking the stereotype regarding “polka” music. FPB is the first polka band to perform at a Woodstock Festival!
Fritz’s Polka Band has made 17 recordings, which have achieved international airplay. Individuals of the band, and the band itself, have received some prestigious honors. As a group, FPB has performed on stage with “Canada’s Polka King,” Walter Ostanek (Grammy winner), “America’s Polka King,” the late Frank Yankovic (Grammy winner), LynnMarie Rink (Grammy nominee), and Glen Burtnik. Individually, Fritz has performed on-stage with Steve Augeri (former lead singer of Journey). FPB even appears on “The Manchurian Candidate” DVD, from Paramount Pictures!
Additionally, Fritz’s Polka Band has opened up shows for Walt Ostanek, the late Frank Yankovic, Jimmy Sturr (Grammy winner), and BeauSoleil (Grammy winner). FPB has played at: Woodstock ‘99, the New York State Fair, regional and county fairs, ethnic events, colleges, concerts, social occasions, corporate events, weddings, anniversaries, and benefits. Students from RIT have put together some recommendations for the Broadway Market and will present their findings on 02/17/2010 at 3 pm.

Eleven students are working under the guidance of Professor Alex Bitterman, Ph.D, to revitalize the visual condition of the Broadway Market. The project allows senior-level students the opportunity to collaborate with the Broadway Market to address current issues.
The group’s final solutions will be presented to Broadway Market employees and Buffalo city officials alike. The presentation will be held at 3pm, February 17th 2010, at the Broadway Market, 999 Broadway, Buffalo, NY. The event is open to the public.

The SumoKids Foundation will produce free 3‐minute personality videos of Buffalo teenagers who want to apply for acting roles in a TV series based on the popular teen novel, “Huge” by Sasha Paley.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday January 18th, WNY AmeriCorps will be assembling toiletry care packages for Haven House at the Famous Broadway Market. CityCorps, a service organization co-sponsored by Councilmember Kearns, Councilmember Franczyk and WNY AmeriCorps, is conducting a donation drive to collect new toiletries. CityCorps is looking for donations of:
• Bar soap
• Shampoo
• Tooth paste
• Deodorant
• Tissue/toilet paper
• Any other new toiletries
Where: Donations can be dropped off on floor thirteen in City Hall in Councilmember Franczyk’s office, 1315, or at a collection box in the main office at the Broadway Market between now and 01/13/2010.
